This shirt was benchworn by Liverpool Legend Samuel ‘Sammy’ Lee for the 1985 European Cup Final. Sammy Lee did not make it onto the pitch, therefore the shirt is only benchworn.
The match is largely remembered for the disaster that occurred before the kick-off. Liverpool fans breached a fence separating the two groups of supporters and charged the Juventus fans. The resulting weight of people caused a retaining wall to collapse, killing 39 people and injuring hundreds. Despite calls for an abandonment, the match went ahead because it was felt that further trouble would otherwise occur. The disaster prompted UEFA to ban English clubs from European football for five years, making this shirt even more special! This is the game all Liverpool players are still saying should not have taken place.

Sammy Lee got his first League title medal in 1982 and also helped Liverpool retain the League Cup; the same applied in 1983 and 1984, the latter of which was also the year of their fourth European Cup triumph – Sammy Lee played in every game en route to the final and scored a clinching goal in the first leg of the semi-final at Anfield against Dinamo Bucureşti.
